Athirappilly

Kerala · Western Ghats

Athirappilly

Athirappilly is where the Chalakudy river comes down from the Sholayar forests in a single wide fall, the largest in Kerala. Around it is some of the most intact riverine forest in the Western Ghats: home to four species of hornbill, lion-tailed macaques and wild elephants.

Murai is downstream at Pariyaram, close enough to reach the falls before breakfast and far enough away to keep the quiet.

Water & theme parks

Dream World & Silver Storm

2 / 19 km≈ 5 / 35 min by road

Two of Kerala's best-loved water parks sit on the same road as Murai. Dream World is practically next door; Silver Storm is near Vettilappara, on the way to the falls. Wave pools, slides and family rides make for an easy day out, especially for kids.

How to reach
Drive or take an auto-rickshaw along the Athirappilly road (SH 21). Private buses to Athirappilly also stop nearby.
Good to know
Open daily, roughly 10:30 am – 6:30 pm. Carry swimwear that meets park rules. Weekends and school holidays are busy, so book online and get there when it opens.
Athirappilly Waterfalls

Waterfall

Athirappilly Waterfalls

22 km≈ 40 min by road

Kerala's largest waterfall, often called the "Niagara of India", drops about 80 ft in a wide curtain of water at the edge of the Sholayar forests. Walk the path to the top viewpoint, then take the steps down to the base for the full roar and spray.

How to reach
Drive along SH 21 through Vettilappara. KSRTC and private buses run from Chalakudy. Parking and an entry ticket counter are at the gate.
Good to know
Usually open 8 am – 5 pm. The falls are fullest from June to October, and November to January are the most comfortable months to visit. Wear shoes with good grip, because the steps to the base are slippery.
Vazhachal Waterfalls

Cascade & forest

Vazhachal Waterfalls

27 km≈ 50 min by road

Five kilometres upstream from Athirappilly, the Chalakudy river spills over broad rock steps right next to the road. Vazhachal is wider and gentler than Athirappilly, set in thick forest, and one of the best spots for hornbills in South India.

How to reach
Keep driving past Athirappilly on SH 21. The Vazhachal forest check-post is here, and this is where the Malakkappara forest road begins.
Good to know
Easy to combine with Athirappilly on the same morning. Stay behind the railings, because the currents are strong.

Good to know
Butterflies are most active on sunny mornings. Pair it with Ezhattumugham by walking across the hanging bridge.
Ezhattumugham Nature Village

Nature village

Ezhattumugham Nature Village

14 km≈ 30 min by road

"Prakriti Gramam" is a riverside nature village on the Ernakulam side of the Chalakudy river. Rocky shallows, shaded trails and the Thumboormuzhi hanging bridge make it a lovely slow afternoon.

How to reach
Cross the hanging bridge on foot from Thumboormuzhi, or drive round via the Vettilappara bridge.
Good to know
Only paddle in the shallows marked as safe; the river can rise quickly after rain.
Peringalkuthu Dam

Dam & reservoir

Peringalkuthu Dam

33 km≈ 1 hr by road

One of Kerala's oldest hydro-electric dams, set deep in the forest above Vazhachal, with a still reservoir in the middle of the jungle. The drive in, through thick canopy, is half the reason to go.

How to reach
Turn off SH 21 past Vazhachal. Forest-department rules apply, and access to the dam itself may be restricted.
Good to know
Check access with the Vazhachal forest office first. Elephants are often seen on this stretch, so keep your distance and stay in the car.
Sholayar Dam & Forest

Rainforest & dam

Sholayar Dam & Forest

55 km≈ 1 hr 45 min by road

Sholayar is one of the tallest dams in Kerala, deep in the evergreen Sholayar range. The forest road climbs through some of the Western Ghats' best-kept wilderness, home to lion-tailed macaques, hornbills and elephants.

How to reach
Drive SH 21 through the Vazhachal check-post towards Malakkappara. Vehicles are allowed through roughly 6 am – 6 pm (two-wheelers until 4 pm).
Good to know
Plastic is declared and checked at the check-posts, and you can be fined. There are no stops, food or fuel inside the forest, so start early with a full tank.
Malakkappara

Tea hills

Malakkappara

75 km≈ 2 hr 30 min by road

A tea-estate village on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border at the end of one of the state's most beautiful forest drives. Expect misty tea slopes, cool air and views towards Valparai.

How to reach
All the way along SH 21 via Vazhachal and Sholayar, about 2.5 hours through protected forest. KSRTC also runs a well-known "jungle safari" bus from Chalakudy.
Good to know
Treat it as a full day trip. Check-post timings apply, and the forest stretch has to be driven within the allotted time without stopping.

Distances and times are approximate, from Murai by road. Opening hours and forest rules change, so please check before you go.
