Athirappilly Through the Year: When to Visit the "Niagara of India"

Monsoon thunder, post-rain greens or clear winter skies. Here's how the falls and the forest change through the year.

Athirappilly Through the Year: When to Visit the "Niagara of India"

Most people meet Athirappilly once, in a hurry, on a day trip from Kochi. Stay nearby and you'll see that the falls look different in every season, and so does everything around them.

June to September: the monsoon

The southwest monsoon arrives in early June and the Chalakudy river swells within days. The falls become a roaring brown curtain, and from the top viewpoint you'll feel the spray before you see the water. Roads are wet, the forest is at its greenest and the whole valley smells of rain. If the river runs dangerously high, access to the base may be closed. Check before you go and keep to the railings.

October to January: the sweet spot

After the rains the river runs full but clear, the sky opens up and the temperature drops to a comfortable 22–30°C. This is the best time to walk down to the base, drive the forest road to Malakkappara, and sit out on the deck after dark without the humidity.

February to May: summer

The falls thin out into separate strands. It's quieter and warmer, and a good time for birdwatching around Vazhachal, when hornbills are often seen near fruiting trees. Plan your outings for early morning and spend the afternoons in the pool.

Our advice

For the drama, come in July or August. For comfort, come between October and January. If you're working remotely, stay for a month and see two seasons.
