Athirappilly

About Athirappilly

Upstream, the river falls. Athirappilly is Kerala’s largest waterfall, a white wall of water at the edge of the Sholayar rainforest.

Beyond it the forest runs unbroken for miles: hornbills overhead, elephants on the road and the tea hills of Malakkappara at the end of it all. Murai is your quiet place downstream.

Athirappilly Waterfallsstock: Athirappilly Waterfalls

Waterfall

Athirappilly Waterfalls

22 km · approx. 40 min from Murai

Kerala's largest waterfall, often called the "Niagara of India", drops about 80 ft in a wide curtain of water at the edge of the Sholayar forests. Walk the path to the top viewpoint, then take the steps down to the base for the full roar and spray.

How to reach: Drive along SH 21 through Vettilappara. KSRTC and private buses run from Chalakudy. Parking and an entry ticket counter are at the gate.

Tips: Usually open 8 am – 5 pm. The falls are fullest from June to October, and November to January are the most comfortable months to visit. Wear shoes with good grip, because the steps to the base are slippery.

Cascade & forest

Vazhachal Waterfalls

27 km · approx. 50 min from Murai

Five kilometres upstream from Athirappilly, the Chalakudy river spills over broad rock steps right next to the road. Vazhachal is wider and gentler than Athirappilly, set in thick forest, and one of the best spots for hornbills in South India.

How to reach: Keep driving past Athirappilly on SH 21. The Vazhachal forest check-post is here, and this is where the Malakkappara forest road begins.

Tips: Easy to combine with Athirappilly on the same morning. Stay behind the railings, because the currents are strong.

How to reach: Cross the hanging bridge on foot from Thumboormuzhi, or drive round via the Vettilappara bridge.

Tips: Only paddle in the shallows marked as safe; the river can rise quickly after rain.

Dam & reservoir

Peringalkuthu Dam

33 km · approx. 1 hr from Murai

One of Kerala's oldest hydro-electric dams, set deep in the forest above Vazhachal, with a still reservoir in the middle of the jungle. The drive in, through thick canopy, is half the reason to go.

How to reach: Turn off SH 21 past Vazhachal. Forest-department rules apply, and access to the dam itself may be restricted.

Tips: Check access with the Vazhachal forest office first. Elephants are often seen on this stretch, so keep your distance and stay in the car.

Sholayar Dam & Forest

55 km · approx. 1 hr 45 min from Murai

Sholayar is one of the tallest dams in Kerala, deep in the evergreen Sholayar range. The forest road climbs through some of the Western Ghats' best-kept wilderness, home to lion-tailed macaques, hornbills and elephants.

How to reach: Drive SH 21 through the Vazhachal check-post towards Malakkappara. Vehicles are allowed through roughly 6 am – 6 pm (two-wheelers until 4 pm).

Tips: Plastic is declared and checked at the check-posts, and you can be fined. There are no stops, food or fuel inside the forest, so start early with a full tank.

Malakkapparastock: Malakkappara

Tea hills

Malakkappara

75 km · approx. 2 hr 30 min from Murai

A tea-estate village on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border at the end of one of the state's most beautiful forest drives. Expect misty tea slopes, cool air and views towards Valparai.

How to reach: All the way along SH 21 via Vazhachal and Sholayar, about 2.5 hours through protected forest. KSRTC also runs a well-known "jungle safari" bus from Chalakudy.

Tips: Treat it as a full day trip. Check-post timings apply, and the forest stretch has to be driven within the allotted time without stopping.

Distances are approximate and will be checked against the property’s Google Maps location. Opening times change, so we’ll add a “check before you go” note.
